Benchmarking against a country/region in a subject area

Benchmarking against country/region in a subject area

SciVal Compare (1996 onwards)

  1. Login to SciVal.
  2. If you haven't used SciVal before, you will need to define yourself.  Instructions here.
  3. Click on 'Compare'.
  4. Click on 'All metrics' under 'Benchmarking'

Click on All metrics

  1. Using the menu on the left side of the page, click on the person icon and select your name.
  2. Using the menu on the left side of the page, click on the flag icon and select the region you would like to benchmark against, e.g. Australia, Asia Pacific, the World.  If this is the first time you've benchmarked against this region, you'll need to search for it and add it to the panel.
  3. Under the 'Benchmark all metrics' heading, select the period you would like to use.
  4. Select the subject area you would like to benchmark in.  The default classification schema is All Science Journal Classification Scheme (ASJC), but you can choose from a number of schemas by clicking on the ASJC etc.
  5. Click on 'Table' to get numbers, rather than a graph.
  6. There are several ways to select metrics in the Compare section.

Click on Add metric

  1. Select the metrics to benchmark against the other entity.
  2. If you've selected one metric, you will see the metric values for all years.  To get the overall metric for the whole period will be in the 'Overall' column.  If you've selected multiple metrics, the value shown under the metric headings will be for all the selected years.
  3. You can export to a spreadsheet or add to a report.
Volume metrics, such as number of citations or number of publications are not a good choice when benchmarking an individual researcher against a larger entity.
