The David Rumsey Historical Map Collection focuses on 16th through 21st century maps of North and South America, as well as maps of the World, Asia, Africa, Europe, and Oceania. The collection includes atlases, globes, school geographies, maritime charts, and a variety of separate maps including pocket, wall, children's and manuscript maps.
Historical maps are useful when researching Aboriginal cultural landscapes and they can help researchers develop family histories, trace trading paths and Songlines, investigate traditional fire management regimes, reconstruct land use patterns, and explore local languages.

Local councils and historical societies as well as state and national libraries are also good options for searching for maps, particularly historical map collections. Many of these have been digitised and made freely available online.
