Search tips and using Google Scholar

Advanced Search tips

  • Use the keywords not the entire question
  • Link your keywords together into an effective search using Boolean Operators
    • AND: combine concepts, e.g., taxation AND welfare
    • OR: connect synonyms, e.g., progress OR improvement
    • “phrase search” searches for multiple words as a term/phrase: e.g., “public value” 
    • (nesting): keeps terms together, e.g., (progress OR improvement) AND “public value”
    • Truncation: Searches on the stem of the word by applying an asterisk, e.g.,  govern*  = government, governmental, governmentally, governing, governance…
