Copyright Considerations for Open Texts
An Open Text is a published work, so copyright must be considered if you are using any materials created by someone else (eg images, figures, long quotes). Consider the following:
- Before using other people’s work, check if it is openly licensed under Creative Commons?
If yes, you can reuse the content without permission provided the license terms are followed.
- Something freely accessible (e.g. an image found via Google), does not mean it is free of copyright.
If relevant, source free, Public Domain or Creative Commons licensed images from sites such as Pixabay or Unsplash, but remember you may still need to attribute.
- Adapting other people's works generally requires permission.
- Could the work contain any Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property? Guidelines apply for use.
