International law

The Encyclopaedic Australian Legal Dictionary defines international law as:

"The body of law established by sovereign states that regulates the conduct of states and other entities possessing international legal personality. International law, also known as 'public international law', differs from private international law which is that body of domestic law concerned with legal questions containing a foreign element, and may result in the application of foreign law that differs or 'conflicts' with the law of the forum. Topics of international law include the law of the sea, the law of treaties, state jurisdiction, international criminal law, human rights, international humanitarian law, and the international law of the environment. Through international law an attempt is made to identify and advance common interests of humanity."1
